I love reading electronically! I have been doing so for a long time having owned several handheld devices that were dedicated ereaders or on my iPod/iPhone/iPad and Palm OS handhelds.
Two years ago, as a gift from my family, I was given a nook. It is (because it still works) easy to use, and lightweight. I found that I needed a clip on light to read in low light. That's not a problem as I have three of those "booklights".
I like to keep up with technology and I am always looking a new devices when we go out shopping. Hubs keeps asking me why I am not buying a new one. That's why he is wonder hubby.
So, when I saw this smaller, lighter version of my nook 1st edition, I decided to pre-order one. Because I did pre-order, I was rewarded with free shipping. The pre-order said that it would ship May 1 (for Mother's Day). Well, it didn't. It shipped early!!! It arrived via UPS to my porch yesterday. I love unboxing new technology so I took photos along the way. (Photos are here at Flickr).
I plugged it in to fully charge, but it could be used while doing so, so I went ahead and did all the setup. All of that went smoothly, I am happy to say. Since I have bought a new router, I paid close attention to the wireless setup so I can change it this weekend when I set up my new router.
The user guide and quick start are ebooks on the nook, but I used my desktop computer to download the PDFs for easier reading while I try out the features on the nook. This works for me and makes the learning curve faster. Having them on the Web means anyone can read them which is handy for making the decision if you are buying one as a gift.
(Recently a friend remarked that she loves her Kindle but her sister got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and wishes it was easy to use. If people want just a ereader, DON'T buy them something more complicated just because YOU like it. Just sayin')
Downloading my purchased (and free) books to the nook was easy. I spent some time reading in the living room with and without the glow light on. It is much easier reading with the light on.
But, this morning, I took it outside and decided that the glow light was not needed outdoors in the shade. I walked over to the driveway, in strong sunlight, and the nook passed the sunlight test with and without my sunglasses.
I envision a summer on the porch. Want to join me?

Have you tried reading in the dark yet? How did you like the glowlight?
I have read in the dark with the glow light on and it is great.
The light is not good outdoors but when turned off the text is clearly readable.
