Using the Ancestry.com iPad app

After the process of logging in to Ancestry.com (using the app) and choosing a tree to open (presumably yours), the tree remains on the iPad until you open it again.

This is new. With previous versions, the data was downloaded each time you opened the app. I would suspect that making the app optimized for the iPad was the motivation for Ancestry.com to make an app that looks great and is useful on the iPad. This device is designed for visual learners and I have noticed that people love to show off their iPad.You should pay attention to Apple's iPad commercials even if you don't have an iPad.

Yesterday, I made changes to my tree at Ancestry.com and when I opened the app on my iPad, these changes were NOT present. This meant that I must have to ask Ancestry.com's server to "please send me the new data".

In this screenshot shown here, note the purple arrow. This is where you tap to make the "dialog box" appear to refresh your data. (in the next blog post, I will tell you what to do next!)

One of the things about apps is that there are very little directions. For those of us who have been using computers for 20 years plus this can be frustrating. Young users just mess around tapping on the screen until they figure it out. You need to visit the developers Web site (listed at the iTunes page for the app) to see what is up if you need help.

I uploaded photos to ancestry.ca, however when I go to the ipad, it says no photos are available. I can view them within the tree on ancestry website, but not on the ipad. What am I doing wrong?

I have not had that problem. All my photos seem to be OK. Perhaps you should delete the app and reinstall it. I do this if I have a problem with any app. Then download it again and get your tree over again.

Let me know if this works, OK?

Hi Midge,
I tried deleting the app. Reinstalled and it still didn't pick up the photos. I'll try changing the privacy settings within ancestry.ca, uninstall the app, and download it again.
I have another question while we're at it....when I installed the app, I wanted to see what the tree would look like so I opened the "sample tree" that came with the app. It's JFKennedy. Now it appears as one of my trees to select! How can I delete that from the app? Its not one of my trees in ancestry.ca!

I'd try rebooting your iPad after installing an app. I read this today while working with another app.

Hi Midge,
I contacted ancestry.ca about my difficulty in attaching photos and my inability in deleting the "sample JFK tree" that came with the app. The nice fellow told me that I have to attach each photo to a person, not just have them in the gallery of the tree....and it works. The other problem of the JFK sample tree - still exists. He said there is no way to delete it as it came with the app, but that they are working on a fix!

Ah, I didn't think about your photos not being attached to persons in your tree. I have been using Ancestry (the Web site) so long that I did not think of that. Good.

I know I had the JFK tree the first day but I deleted it right away. I used genealogy apps on the Palm and Windows platform and they had sample trees too so I knew to delete them after figuring out how the app worked.

I am VERY glad you got back to me. Keep the information coming.

Hi, what seems to be missing from this app is the relationship calculator, unless it is just me that's missing something .

Hi I purchased a hint on my iPad app and it won't download. Please help.

If you are asking if it is possible to download an image with the iPad app then I would say that you can't do that. The app seems to only link "hints" with the person you are attaching them to.

To actually capture an image you must use a regular computer.

I hope this helps.

Hi Midge

Yes the hint was an image of an electoral roll which I have paid $1.99 through iTunes and am unable to download it or link it to the person after following the instructions on the iPad.
When I log into ancestry.com on my computer it doesn't seem to have a record of the hint purchase. What should i do now? :(

If you bought something in iTunes, it should be in iTunes not in the Ancestry app. Try the iBookstore app too. Use the search tool to find it by name.

i didn't know that you could buy anything like that with iTunes.
