One of the hardest things about preparing to move is making decisions about the antique furniture that I have inherited. Some pieces are "used up" after being actually used in the four houses that my family has lived in in my lifetime.
One piece is my mother's hope chest. It needs touching up but it really is a beauty. When people come to my home, they remark about how great it is. I really like the storage. OK, I am not an antiques person but I think that I need to keep it.
Tucked in a corner of the chest drawer is this piece of paper which looks like it was taken from a catalog. I would bet that my grandmother peered at it while she painted. Today, we would have enlarged it.

The Writing Circle
Recently, I read a tweet about joining a Barnes & Noble sponsored book club for those of us that read electronically. [Enrollment is now closed so don't go looking to sign up].
As a highly wired person and the owner of a nook reading device, I jumped at the chance. What surprised me was the number of people who were interested in electronic reading! Many are planning to read the book on a device that is an "app" on an iPod touch, iPhone or soon, via the iPad.
I have the Barnes and Noble free app on my iPod touch and will be able to read this book on either of my devices.
I set the nook down with the "cover" on screen on top of my own [print] book, titled "Digital Storytelling Guide for Educators" and took this photo.
I have been reading electronically for many years and so, I am looking forward to reading not only how much people like the medium of anytime, anywhere reading but also to see how an online book club works.
Oh, did I mention the book was free? Now, that's exciting......

Genealogist's Journal 8 May 2010
With the new carpet installed and a lot of "stuff" to clean out in our cellar, it is hard to find time to work! I declared May "doctor month" and set up appointments for my physical and my eye exam. Of course, my primary care physician talked non-stop about his Jewish Austrian (now Poland) ancestors that I have been helping him with for a few years. I'm still trying to get him to go to the cemetery in Brooklyn, NY and take photos for me.
I decided to work on my Newport, RI ancestors for a bit. I have three Peckham ancestors before there is a female. She married Theodoty Hall and that line leads to my Perkins ancestors here in Bridgewater then it is back to RI! I want to make sure I can get it right before I move away.
The immigrant ancestor is John (1595-1681) who came from Boston to RI about 1634 and settled in the Newport-Middletown RI area. The RI Vital Records at NEHGS are a joy to behold as long as your ancestors could pay the fee to have their vital records registered. Thanks to Cherry Bamburg, FAGS, I finally understand that. The Peckham genealogy is available at Ancestry.com and is in print at Higginson's. With only 5 generations of this name to work on, I am making much progress. Only one man didn't have multiple wives, so I have to be careful to get the right mother of my ancestor.
Appropriate for Mother's Day weekend, don't you think?

Lighting Up My Life!
Today, at noon-ish, my husband will choose to take the severance package and separate from his company. This is the first step in the process of retirement. When he turns 66 in February, then he will claim his Social Security and be "retired". I am younger but I will change my status soon to claim mine early so I can put it away as part of my retirement plan.
To celebrate, we bought two of these lamps for the new living room, which I now learn is called the "Great Room". My daughter will help us with the house decorating.
Tomorrow, they put down the new carpet in the family room in our present house. This will give us some space to start organizing the things we want to pack and take with us. So much will be thrown out!
I expected this to take another year so I am a bit disorganized. We will have to decide on a house and put this one up for sale. It could be a few months or another year (if we have one built). I don't know which is the lesser of two evils.
The question remains, "How am I going to get any work done at all?" I have a short plan for some cemeteries to visit. My husband and "boneyard buddy" may still be working until mid-June. I was hoping for a couple days in late May to do some of the photography and tending of relative's graves. So much for the New Year's resolution plan I made for my genealogy work!
